Growing up in Michigan and Massachusetts:

Black and White Shapes
Before I could read, I loved seeing the black and
white shapes and listening to the sounds of my
parents reading aloud. Maybe I was entranced by
the music of their voices but I like to imagine that I
was creating stories of my own.
About Me
Multipurpose Magenta
Soon I wrote and drew my own colorful worlds.
My best storybooks were cut into special shapes
and had pop-up windows or were drawn with my
favorite magenta crayon. I loved the color magenta
and the way the word sounded.
M-a-g-e-n-t-a.
The word swirled in my head, like sunset and
twilight mixing into a purplish world. Magenta was
my creative sparkle. And it was the best color for
everything.
Turtle Toes
In the summers my imagination swam in lakes. I
floated in the water, pulling my toes toward the
surface, away from the snapping turtles lurking at
the muddy bottom. I tried not to believe my
grandfather's tales about turtles coming out at the
full moon and snapping at anything red. But I would
still never wear a red bathing suit. And luckily
magical magenta is closer to purple than red.
Solving Puzzles
I loved to solve jigsaw puzzles, right side
up with the pictures or upside down with
no clues but the shapes. Then I found the
world of three-dimensional puzzles: paths
through the woods, tunnels through snow,
tree limbs reaching into the sky. And now
my puzzles are with words: characters,
thoughts, actions, instincts and emotions.
All woven together into stories.
